Bathroom Advice

What should you figure out before renovating a bathroom?

A bathroom packs a lot into a small space. Start with what isn’t working now, then figure out which decisions affect each other and what can wait.

Begin with daily use

Think about the everyday stuff: moving around, showering or bathing, privacy, storage, lighting and accessibility. That tells us a lot more than starting with a tile sample.

  • What works and what feels limited?
  • How is the room used each day?
  • Which needs are changing?

Start with the big decisions

Layout

Think about movement, access, privacy and adjacent spaces.

Bathing + showering

Describe the routines and needs the main bathing area should support.

Vanity + storage

Consider everyday storage, work surface and vanity use.

Surfaces + fixtures

Consider appearance, use, cleaning and the questions around connected surfaces and fixtures.

Remember what connects

Water and fixture locations, lighting, electrical, ventilation, flooring, transitions and existing conditions can affect the discussion around the main room decisions. Accessibility-related needs may also affect more than one subject and should remain specific to the household.

Write down what you still need to figure out
